Chester County Parks and Preservation lists 6 park sites. Picture-perfect Springton Manor Farm is a little gem in Wallace Township. At the northern part of the county, Wallace Township remains fairly rural but this demonstration farm still feels like an oasis in the midst of suburbia. Besides the manor house, there is a red barn, sheep, goats, wildflowers, fishing pond, picnic tables plus a trail around the property perimeter and along the creek.
I first visited Springton Manor when my son was a toddler. He wasn’t big on napping, so I was always seeking places to take him in hopes I’d tire him out! When we got our first dog, Charlie, Springton Manor was a pretty place to go with him, my son and daughter to burn off some energy and get the kids away from a screen. I love the unspoiled landscape of Springton Manor Farm. The place features faultless views. Also the complete package of farm animals, butterfly area, and a creek for wading make for a wide variety of exploring options.
On a Sunday morning, the day before Downingtown Area School District opens for the 2022/23 school year, the parking lot had the most vehicles I’ve ever seen there — less than a handful. By the fishing pond, there were a few solo fishermen and a family relaxing on a blanket. Along Indian Run Creek, we encountered a family splashing with their dogs.
Theo and I used the trails to practice his leash walking among distractions. Theo saw or smelled them before me — 4 deer! Needless to say, Theo was itching to run. I’m proud and relieved to share, he is walking on leash with a lot less pulling. My good doggo even sat and waited when I let go of his leash to cross logs and rocks ahead of him. He’s becoming a much better hiking buddy.
My one beef with this park is the inconsistent trail markers. When Theo and I were on Indian Run Trail in the wooded area along the creek, I thought I’d gone off the trail. The path had gotten thin and seemed overgrown. I didn’t see any white blazes for a stretch and we hadn’t reached the creek. Although I know it’s not a huge place, I worried we were charting our own path. Luckily we recovered quickly and managed to keep sight of the trail markers after that.
