This post covers our July 2022 hike in Union Township, PA — along the Horse-Shoe Trail west of French Creek State Park.
We have two hiking goals, hike the whole Horse-Shoe Trail (in sections at a time) and we hike a portion of the AT in each state. Our Horse-Shoe adventure won’t be a thru hike. We aim to cover the whole trail with many day trips.
The Horse-Shoe trail goes from Valley Forge near Philadelphia to the Appalachian Trail northeast of Harrisburg. It is 140 miles long.
For our Fourth of July weekend in 2022, we tackled the Horse-Shoe Trail just west of French Creek State Park. We hiked from the group campground at French Creek to the Union Township border.
It was a warm day without a threat of rain. As usual, Theo loved having his freedom. We saw only two groups of hikers and a pair of mountain bikers along the way. There was not much in the way of streams for a re-fill, so it’s good that we brought enough water. Unlike many trails we’ve hiked in PA, this was not terribly rocky, nor the elevation swings too tough.
